King David's illuminating repentance

Description

In the miniature, King David kneels at a lectern - his hands raised imploringly to heaven - while reciting the seven penitential psalms. Behind him, a vast landscape dominated by a massive river bridge with busy traffic unfolds. The penitential psalms were seen as an expression of David's repentance. The scene encourages us to imitate David's humility and devotion as the penitential psalms are recited on the following pages.
