A pact with the devil
Description
The prayer text of the Salutationes Mariae begins on the left-hand page of this Psalter Hours. Based on the 150 psalms, this prayer addresses 150 "Aves" to the Virgin, who appears in the illuminated initial. Kneeling before her is the cleric Theophilus, who, according to legend, has made a pact with the devil. He fervently begs Mary to accept the diabolical contract and deliver him from it. The message is clear: Mary has mercy on repentant sinners.
