Ink pen

The silver ink set consists of a silver base with a wooden drawer, a wafer container with a bell as a lid, an inkwell and a scattering sand box. The hallmark refers to the origin from Strasbourg and the master mark to the goldsmith Johann Jakob Kirstein (1733-1816). The ink pen belonged to the Basel silk ribbon manufacturer Martin Bachofen-Heitz (1727-1814), whose portrait can be seen to the right of the pen, along with a portrait of his wife Margaretha (1735-1819). Martin Bachofen-Heitz acquired the Rollerhof on Basel's Münsterplatz in 1758, which had been the residence of a noble canon until the Reformation. Today, the first floor of the building houses the restaurant of the Museum der Kulturen.
