Hüglin Monstrance

Description

What makes this monstrance so exquisite is the scene inside the cylinder, a «Little Garden of Paradise» in which two kneeling angels originally held a finger of John the Baptist. Standing on the buttresses alongside the garden are the figures of John the Apostle, John the Baptist, and Saint Barbara, while the Virgin and Child in a radiating mandorla and Saint Andrew are installed inside the tower. The donor of the monstrance was the head of the cathedral works, Conrad Hüglin von Rammersmatt (1467–1509).
