Hallwyl Monstrance

Description

This monstrance was made to house the relics of saints Theodulus and Maurice sent to Basel by the cathedral chaplain of Sion in 1490. The figures standing in front of the Late Gothic tracery are saints Theodulus and Maurice, the Virgin and Child, and an unknown sainted bishop (possibly Pantalus). The donor was almost certainly Hartmann von Hallwyl, dean of the cathedral and provost from 1481 to 1504, whose coat of arms is blazoned on the foot.
