Gold enamel clock with leather over-case with gold piqué and monogram
Description
On the dial there is a depiction of Venus and Cupid in fine enamel painting. On the back of the case is an image of the Nereid Amphitrite, the ruler of the sea. She is pulled by two dolphins and is surrounded by Tritons (sea gods) and Nereids (nymphs). Richard Street, a clockmaker in London's Fleet Street, was admitted to the Clockmakers' Company in 1687 and served as Warden there from 1715 to 1722. This clock is said to have been made for Sir Justinian Isham (1685-1730), fourth Baron of Lampert Hall (Northampton). It remained in the family until the death of Sir Gyles Isham (1903-1976).
