Object 2

Figurehead of the former Cardinal joint-stock brewery

Under a cardinal's hat with strings hanging down on both sides, each with fifteen tassels, within an iron ring are various brewing tools such as a ladle and malt shovel, as well as a wreath of hops, a sheaf of barley ears and a stein filled with beer. Since the Middle Ages, the six-pointed star on the beer stein has been the symbol of pubs that brewed and served beer. In the 19th century it became the symbol of beer breweries. Around 1880, there were over five hundred breweries in Switzerland. Most of them were small home breweries that served beer in their own pubs. This sign was probably created for such a home brewery. The name of the inn was probably "Zum Kardinal". From about 1840 to 1895, the sign was attached to the Basel brewery "Kardinal".
