Farming in the City Centre
Description
There used to be a hospital on Freie Strasse that can be traced back to the thirteenth century. The hospital had its own farm outside the city walls on the site of what is now Elisabethenstrasse. In a nod to its owners, the farm was called the Spitalschüre. The land on which it stood was still largely undeveloped and hence was used as farmland. It was the hospital farm that lent the district the name Vorstadt der Spitalschüren – until it was renamed after the church of St. Elisabeth erected there. The stone tablet with an inscription dated 1461 comes from the farm that was demolished in 1859/60. It names Heinrich Yselin and Ulrich zem Luft as hospital stewards and Hans Bruckner as hospital master.
