Objekt 9982
A Master Baker as Donor
Description
This fragment comes from the parish church of St. Ulrich that was torn down in 1888 but originally stood on Rittergasse near Basel Cathedral. It belonged to the pedestal of a tabernacle in which the consecrated Host was kept. Below the Late Gothic tracery is the coat of arms of Hans Sperrer (d. 1456/57), a master baker and alderman of Basel and the donor of the tabernacle. It was probably thanks to grain speculation that Sperrer became wealthy.
