The Order of St. John in Basel
Description
The Johanniterhaus, or House of the Order of St. John, at St. Johanns-Vorstadt 84 was built in 1608. We know that from this stone inscription that was mounted in the stairwell there. The tablet bears the order’s coat of arms with a white cross on the left and the Andlau family coat of arms on the right, Hermann von Andlau being the Knight Hospitaller under whom the house was built. The Basel commandery dates back to the year 1206 and today's district of St. Johann is named after it.
The stone bearing a profile portrait of the French King Henry II (1547–1559) was built into the boundary wall of the site at Steinengraben 69 and Kanonengasse 13.
