City history carved in stone

Description

The monuments exhibited here from the collection of the Basel Historical Museum come from a wide variety of locations in the city. Carved in sandstone between the 15th and 18th centuries, the reliefs were placed on the walls of public buildings, churches, inns and private homes. Artfully carved by stonemasons, they bear witness to the history of the houses, their builders or honor deceased citizens of the town. Often they are the only evidence of a building that has disappeared from the cityscape.
