Entering a new era
Description
In the early 1920s, Basel could boast of Switzerland’s most important airfield,
the Sternenfeld. Balair, the company located there, grew into the largest
Swiss airline during this period. When from the mid-20th century onwards
global air traffic increased greatly, the need for additional destinations led
to the founding of regional airline carriers such as Crossair. This successful
Basel-based airline operated since 1979 and connected Basel with destinations
throughout Europe. It became a subsidiary of Swissair in 1991 and
merged into the newly founded SWISS in 2002.
