Double spice box
Description
Pepper was also cultivated in Southeast Asia from the high to late Middle Ages - first in Thailand, later mainly in Indonesia. From there, mainly the Chinese and domestic markets were served. It was not until the 17th century that pepper reached Europe in significant quantities. Even around 1800, pepper was still considered a precious spice and accordingly, expensive vessels for salt and pepper were produced for the table.
