Dorothy Reliquary Monstrance

Description

This reliquary shows the Early Christian martyr Saint Dorothy with the infant Jesus. The central capsule was probably used for private devotions by Henman Offenburg (1379–1459) of Basel, whose arms are blazoned on the reverse. It was he who presumably donated the reliquary to Basel Cathedral. The foot and leafy crockets were added when the capsule was reworked to make a monstrance for presentation during the liturgy.
