Copies: Plates for a Reliquary Capsule with the Lamb of God and Pope Pius II
Description
Pope Pius II had given Basel Cathedral an Agnus Dei – a wax disk made from the previous year’s paschal candle – which as a treasured possession naturally had to be kept in a costly reliquary made specially for it. These two round plates showing the Lamb of God and the kneeling figure of Pope Pius II formed the obverse and reverse of the original reliquary capsule, this replica of which was commissioned by the HMB in 1969.
