Compulsory measures
Description
The question of how to prevent coercion in treatment has been with psychiatry since its beginnings. As early as the 19th century, it was clear that it should be avoided. Nevertheless, different coercive measures have been used at all times. These include protective gloves, bed fixation, isolation or forced medication. They are an expression of powerlessness in the face of certain symptoms.
The clinic in Basel has not used physical restraints for a long time. Most of the departments are run according to the "open doors" principle – in other words, the doors are not locked. However, coercive measures have not completely disappeared from Swiss clinics: isolation is used on 6% of patients, 3% receive medication against their will.
