Carved trough

The drying of fruit for the purpose of preservation is among the oldest preservation methods of all. Among other things, so-called "carved troughs" were used to store dried fruit. Carved furniture of this type is still often found in farmhouses. As expensive veneered furniture in urban homes, however, they are rather rare. The carved trough in the Kirschgarten comes from the estate of the Basel painter Matthias Bachofen (1776-1829).
