Where Does Our Money Come From?

Description

Rappen – Batzen – Franc

Coin names can tell us quite a bit about the origins of a currency. The Swiss franc and rappen have different roots, the franc in France, the rappen in the so-called Freiburg «Rappenpfennig». It was only in the 19th century that the two were paired up.

Likewise, the old silver batzen, a Bernese invention, looks back on an eventful history. The name was probably used as a derisive term meaning a clod, maybe it also derived from the Bernese bear, «bätz» in the local dialect, the city’s heraldic animal.
