Tracery Infills with Angel Musicians
Description
These fish-bladder-shaped tracery infills were once part of an elaborate stained-glass window in the chapterhouse of Constance Cathedral, formerly the cathedral library. The original cycle of 81 panels, only a few fragments of which have survived in various museums, was made by the workshop of Peter Hemmel, the famous glass painter of Strasbourg, and installed in 1480. Our fragment shows two angel musicians: one playing the organ and another, wearing a crimson dalmatic and surrounded by thick foliage, playing the tromba marina.
