Crucifixion from the Chapel of Notre Dame de la Visitation, Bourguillon (near Fribourg)
Description
These two windows from the choir of the pilgrimage church of Notre Dame in Bourguillon are thought to have been part of a much larger Marian cycle. Both are framed by Gothic architectural elements. The stained glass has been attributed to the glass painter Michel Glaser the Elder of Basel. The richly detailed composition, statuesque figures and style of the drapery all point to the influence of the Basel painter Konrad Witz.
The left window shows Christ on the Cross and three hovering angels holding out chalices to catch his blood. Below him is the grieving figure of Mary, supported by two women and Mary Magdalene, who is shown hugging the foot of the cross. John the Apostle stands to the right, behind him the centurion. The inscription on the banderole quotes the words of the centurion: «Truly this was the Son of God.»
