Strasbourg tiled stove from the Württembergerhof

A stove of this size and quality was much more than a radiator, but at the same time
but at the same time an exquisite piece of equipment that demonstrated the taste and wealth of its
of its owners. The 3 m high Strasbourg tiled stove is composed of a total of
71 individual parts, with the joints so skilfully decorated with gilded ornaments in
gilded ornaments in rocaille forms, so that the stove appears to be
from one piece. The painted floral bouquets were based on
Engravings by various French artists, which exactly match the shape of the
to the shape of the respective picture field.
The tiled stove originally stood in the Württemberger Hof, a splendid
City palace built by the Basel merchant and silk ribbon manufacturer Markus Weiss-
Leissler around 1750. He ordered this monumental stove
from the most renowned Strasbourg stove builder: François-Paul Acker. The stove
was located in a room of 35 square meters, which is considerably larger than the one here in the Kirschgarten. As
the Württemberger Hof was demolished in 1932 and the Basel Museum of
Museum of Art was built in its place, the stove was taken to the Historical Museum
Basel.
