Steadfast trio
Description
For centuries, ‘Our dear lady of Spalen’ adorned the most important entry point to the city, the Spalentor. The statue of Mary was unharmed by the iconoclasm, to which many religious sculptures fell victim after 1529. Long after Basel had become Protestant, the one-time patron of the city, flanked by two prophets, greeted new arrivals, and was a popular destination for pious Catholics. At the beginning of the 1930s the sculptures were replaced by copies and the originals entrusted to Historisches Museum Basel.
