Ancient guard
Description
The shield holder was a decorative element on the Spalentor, the most important access point to the fortified city. Equipped with a helmet, shield and sword, he presents the Basel coat of arms. Together with another shield holder, he was affixed to the central battlement above the outer gate, making those entering the city aware of its ability to defend itself. In 1893 the two stone guards on the Spalentor were replaced by copies and the originals handed over to the Historisches Museum Basel.
