Saint Wolfgang from the Charterhouse of Freiburg im Breisgau
Description
Standing against a landscape background in full regalia, Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg holds his two standard attributes: a model church and an axe. At his feet is the kneeling donor of the panel, Morand von Brunn (d. 1513), who as an Achtburger (a patrician not of noble birth) was a member of Basel’s governing council. His coat of arms is shown at left. The inscription on the banderole translates as: «Saint Wolfgang. Pray for us.»
