Saint George Slaying the Dragon
Description
The print is a humorous take on the impending loss of the Cathedral Treasury following the division of the canton into two half-cantons in 1833. A rather bawdy-looking Saint George is shown lancing an exhausted basilisk, desperately clinging onto an escutcheon bearing Basel’s coat of arms. The collapsed wall at right affords us a glimpse of the Cathedral Treasury, including the Golden Altar Frontal.
