Psychotropic drugs
Description
The huge success of the first antipsychotic/neuroleptic, Largactil, led to a research boom in chemical-pharmaceutical companies from 1953 onwards. In addition to other neuroleptics, the first antidepressants came onto the market from 1958. Other psychotropic drugs followed. After the initial enthusiasm, a sense of disillusionment set in. Some of the drugs had severe side effects. It also became apparent that although they could eliminate symptoms, they could not cure the disease. Nevertheless, psychotropic drugs have become an important part of the treatment. They are usually used in conjunction with other therapies, such as psychotherapy. The high proportion of outpatient treatments in today's psychiatry would be inconceivable without medication.
