Description
Johann Rudolf Faesch (1572–1659), a silk merchant, property dealer and politician, held several high offices in the city. He was chief judge at the marriage court, chief guild master, and from 1636 until his death burgomaster of Basel. He and his wife, Anna Gebwyler (1577–1654), had a house built for themselves on Schneidergasse. This inscription commemorating the couple was mounted facing the courtyard above the door to the staircase tower in 1630. The inscription is flanked by two family coats of arms: Faesch (left) and Gebwyler (right).
