Objekt 9991
High above the Rhine
Description
The salt house at Schifflände was converted into a riverside warehouse in 1682. Mounted high up on the main façade of this three-story building was this relief of two lions rampant supporting the Basel coat of arms. Starting in 1861 the building was used to house a hall of commerce, where local craftsmen could sell their products. This had to be torn down when the River Birsig was rerouted in 1899. A new office building for the Basler Kantonalbank was built on the same site in 1903.
