Power over State and Church

Description

The council, now consisting entirely of delegates from the guilds, gained more influence with the Reformation of 1529. It was responsible for all the town’s interests and its subject territory, and was completely in charge of the church as the ‘Christian Authority.’ A display of the council’s increased power in the reformed city was the new seating for officials, which was erected in 1598 with the completion of the cathedral’s renovation. The stall for the city elders is considered the magnum opus of Renaissance Basel carpentry.
