Life dominated by religion

Description

This picture depicts the fully occupied Basler Münster during mass in 1650 with women and men, young and old, sitting in separate areas. All are dressed uniformly as dictated by the Reformation’s strict rules. Attendance at mass was mandatory – as generally all aspects of life were dominated by religious rules from the Reformation in 1529 up to the 19th century. The most senior members of the Basel Council and their court servants can be seen in their carved seating to the left of the picture.
