Portraits of Johann Rudolph Frey-Hummel (1690-1740) and his wife Anna Elisabeth Frey-Hummel (1697-1766)

With this large-format portrait pair, one might think that the sitters are
Sitter is a nobleman or a ruler. However, in front of the ruling motif of the curtain, it is not a prince that is depicted here, but the Basel merchant Johann Rudolph Frey-Hummel next to his wife Anna Elisabeth. He was a Basel councillor and director of the merchants' association. The painter Johann Rudolf Huber oriented himself on ruler portraits of absolutism. He is considered the most successful Swiss portraitist of the late Baroque.
