Johannes Burckhardt-Iselin (1783-1819) was a Basel factory owner, councilor, and lieutenant colonel. He is also depicted as such in the painting, which is not least intended to emphasize his status in society. His hand rests on the saber pommel and at the bottom is his helmet with high plume.
