Pipe bowl with view of Basel Cathedral
Description
Pipe bowls made of porcelain were often painted with depictions of famous paintings, portraits of beautiful women, political confessions or views of buildings. In this case, the pipe bowl was a commemorative gift among students. The inscription on the back names the donor (F. Steinfels) and the recipient (H. Menzel). The inscription W.S. 1884 refers to the winter semester of 1889 and the student environment of this gift. Floral pipes played an important role in student customs.
