Pawn in the hands of foreign powers
Description
Towards the end of the Roman rule a realignment of powers occurred.
Beyond the Rhine, Alemannic settlements sprung up. The Germanic newcomers
were wealthy warriors with their entourage who secured the Rhine
borders – presumably following Roman orders – and left the local inhabitants
alone. In the 6th century the Franconian King Clovis conquered the
Alemannic territories. Members of the Franconian upper class moved to
Basel to control important connecting roads. Under Franconian rule Basel
was raised to an episcopal town with its own mint.
