Description
Continuation of fine painting under Joseph Hannong
The oval plate, which originally served as a base for a basket, depicts a rose with a large beetle sitting on it. The model for the flower was a copperplate engraving of a magnificent flower basket by Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer from around 1670, from which the rose was copied and isolated as a single flower. The very fine painting is in the tradition of Strasbourg flower painting, as Christian Wilhelm von Löwenfinck had influenced it. Under the direction of Joseph Hannong (from 1762), this style of painting was continued until about 1770.
