Octagonal equatorial sundial

Description

In the 18th century, this type of equatorial sundial, made mainly in Augsburg, became particularly important, also known as the "Augsburg type" because of the place of manufacture. On an octagonal base plate, on one side, on a hinge, is the narrow equatorial ring, which carries the hour numerals. In the diameter of the ring is spring-mounted a round pin to which the shadow caster is attached. On another octagonal side is attached the polar altitude bow, which allows setting for any location. On the top, as here, there is usually a clapper plumb bob for accurate horizontal alignment. On the bottom, the polar altitudes of various locations were usually engraved. The signature "Johann Willebrand in Augspurg 48" can also be found on the bottom of this sundial.
