Liturgical Items and Gifts for the Saints
Description
Basel Cathedral Treasury also features metal ware and other items for use in liturgy. Chalices, bells, censers and corporas-cases all had a specific function in the celebration of Mass. The crosses could be set up on the altar or carried in processions. Feast-day processions in particular were led by the beadle whose ceremonial staff is also exhibited here. The small pendant crosses and reliquary capsules were donated by various benefactors and originally suspended from the reliquaries themselves.
The reliquaries, monstrances and crosses were kept in a cabinet which is also exhibited here. The treasury was displayed in its majority only on special feast days, when the items were set up on the high altar according to a fixed presentation scheme. Parts of the treasury, especially the reliquaries, were also borne aloft in ceremonial processions or displayed inside the cathedral on other special occasions.
