Objekt 3

Group of traveling musicians ("Bänkelsänger")

Description

This group, modeled after a watercolor by Hieronymus Hess entitled "Die Moritatensänger am Nadelberg" (1832), is one of the largest groups from the workshop in Zizenhausen. On the panel you can see an earthquake at the top (Basel earthquake 1356?) and a flood catastrophe at the bottom (flood in Hölstein 1830?). Natural disasters, atrocities, misfortunes or miraculous rescues were part of the usual program of traveling morality singers.
