Gold enamel clock

Description

This gold enamel clock shows the technique of enamel painting, which originated around 1630, in its highly developed form. The case and dial are completely covered with the finest enamel painting. The exteriors show two scenes in which royal widows testify their love to their spouses beyond death: on the one hand Berenice, who offers a lock of hair to her deceased husband, and on the other Artemisia, who, mourning the death of her husband Mausolos, wants to drink his ashes.
