Christian Schlegel was born around 1667 in Mels (SG); after various places of residence he settled in Basel in 1712. From his second marriage with the Basel burgher's daughter Anna Catharina Sixtin came his son Jeremias. After the death of his father on November 3, 1746, he had to take over the workshop despite his youthful age of 16.

Christian Schlegel (around 1667–1746)Basel 2nd Quarter of 18th c.L.614 mmThe shawm forms a pair with a second instrument, which used to be owned by the HMB (lnv.1879.98.b.).It was exchanged in 1976 for a bassoon by Jeremias Schlegel (Nr.12).
