Late Roman contorniates

The role of contorniates is still not fully clear. Since two of these pieces celebrate the charioteers Stefanas and Eustorgius it is possible that they served as prizes at games and chariot races.

Object description

Roman Empire. Contorniate coins with the images of Alexander the Great (336–323 BC), Emperor Nero (A.D. 54–68) and Valentinian III (A.D. 425–455), below further speciment on the race horse Amor, as well as ivory token with the head of the heroe Hercules, 4th–5th cent.
