Objekt 2440

From fish market to road hub

Description

Located near the banks of the Rhine, the square served the fishing trade. The model shows its state around 1870 shortly before the whole area was completely redesigned. Created in 1914 for the national exhibition in Bern, the model shows the immense modernisation occurring in the city at that time. Further restructuring in the 1930s and 1950s changed the square’s appearance once again. Today it is a major traffic junction. Only a copy of the large fish market well still remains in the midst of the bus and tram traffic.
