Folding sundial
Description
David Beringer (1756-1821) passed the examination for master compass maker in 1777 and produced sundials, compasses and other mathematical-physical instruments. His younger brother Paul Phillip Beringer was also a Nuremberg master compass maker. His son Johann Ulrich Beringer was still working as a compass maker in the middle of the 19th century. The Beringer family produced wooden sundials - the scales and decorations were glued to the wood as hand-colored copperplate engravings. Beringer's travel sundials were widely used.
