Empire-Room
Description
The Empire style is a particular form of Neo-Classicism that developed in France during the empire of Napoleon I (1804–1815) and that dominated arts and crafts, interior design and fashion throughout Europe, including Basel, until around 1830. It is characterised by monumental forms, exotic woods, particularly mahogany, neo-classical ornamentation and, following Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign of 1798, Egyptian decorative motifs. The Empire style deliberately distinguished itself from the styles of Louis XV (Rococo) and Louis XVI (early Neo-Classicism), which represented the ancien régime.
