Computer tomography

Description

Computed tomography (CT) offers a fascinating insight into the inside of a violin. By using X-rays to illuminate the instrument layer by layer, damage such as cracks, worm damage or repairs can be detected down to the smallest detail.

The CT scan of the Gagliano violin revealed repairs to the pegbox with three screws that were not visible to the naked eye. Despite minor damage, the violin is in good overall condition. It was also confirmed that the label was stuck on in its original position, which confirms its authenticity.
