Casting a Medal
Description
Medals were usually cast. To start with, the medallist produced a model in wood or wax, followed by negative moulds of both sides in the desired shape.
Each single medal was then cast between the jointed moulds. Subsequently the medallist removed the sprue from the raw casting and trimmed the edge. To finish off, the piece was smoothened and chased or given an artificial patina.
