In 1250, the Bishop of Basel gifted building land by the inner city wall to the Franciscans. Previously, the area between the open Birsig stream and the old hospital had in each case been equally cultivated or lain fallow on both sides of the demolished Burkhard city wall. Up until 1256 a monastery was built with a mighty Gothic church 65 metres long.
