Bottle vase (sake bottle) with lid
Description
The square bottle vase is painted with a so-called Kakiemon decoration. Decors of this type were named after the potter Sakaida Kakiemon (actually Kizaemon; 1596-1666), who worked in the Japanese porcelain city of Arita; characteristic are motifs such as bamboo and prunus shrubs, peonies, brushwood hedges, tiger, dragon and lion depictions, which contrast excitingly with large, white ground surfaces. Two opposite sides of the four-sided vase are each painted with a strictly stylized prunus perennial and a symmetrically arranged flowering plant, as they appear in the same form in preserved Japanese models. Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and founder of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, kept large quantities of Chinese and Japanese porcelain in his collection, which served as models for the Meissen modelers and painters.
