Two krater vases with a view of the Rhine bridge in Basel

Description

The shape of the two vases imitates Greek clay vessels, so-called kraters. The shape of these ancient mixed vessels was taken up again in many European porcelain manufactories during the Classicist period. Set up as a pair, these vases were usually placed on mantelpieces or chests of drawers.
Both vases show a view from the Kleinbasel bridgehead towards Grossbasel, with slightly different angles. the Rhine Gate on the Grossbasel side was demolished in 1839/40; as this can no longer be seen in the depictions, the vases must have been created after 1840.
