Tower clock with astronomical displays
Description
This late example of a clock in turret form probably represents the most precious preserved Basel clock. The engraved signature "Nicolas Annone A Basle" is found at the front center between the two small dials. D'Annone was guilded from 1678 and died in Basel in 1703. The case stands on a base with four hemispherical feet. It is flanked by four turned columns supporting a balustrade and crowned by a figure of Atlas. The globe on its shoulders with a lunar calendar for 29.5 days allows reading the phases of the moon. In the top of the case there are two medallions with portraits: the Sun King Louis XIV in front and the Dauphin on the back. The clock shows on the front side below on two small dials the planetary time with hour regents (left) and the signs of the zodiac (right), in the middle with two hands on one dial ring each with Roman numerals the hours and with Arabic numerals the minutes. On the back, constellations, months, saints of the day, quarter-hour and hour strikes can be read or set.
